NCTE Reintroduces One-Year B.Ed. Program to Enhance Teacher Education

NEWS CHARIOT : In a significant move to improve the quality of education in schools, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has decided to reinstate the one-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course. The decision was made during a recent meeting of the NCTE Governing Council. The one-year B.Ed. program was discontinued by the central government in December 2014 to improve the quality of teaching standards. After a hiatus of nearly a decade, NCTE has now reversed the earlier decision to reintroduce the one-year B.Ed. course.
This one-year B.Ed. program will be available only to students who have completed a four-year undergraduate or two-year postgraduate degree. It will not be available to students with a three-year undergraduate degree. Furthermore, institutions offering two-year B.Ed. programs will need to transform into multi-disciplinary institutes by 2030, as clarified by NCTE Chairman Pankaj Arora.
Additionally, NCTE is actively discussing the draft regulations for 2025 with the Ministry of Education. The draft regulations, titled “NCTE Regulations – 2025,” are being prepared for public consultation. NCTE has formed a panel of eight members to finalize various course frameworks for the one-year B.Ed. program. The NCTE is also looking to expand the integrated teacher education programs (ITEP) and four-year dual-degree graduate-level courses. Currently, B.A., B.Ed., B.Com-B.Ed., and B.Sc-B.Ed. courses are offered in 64 institutions across the country, with plans to include subjects like Yoga, Physical Education, Sanskrit, Performing Arts, History, Music, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, and Economics.
As part of the reintroduced one-year B.Ed. course, NCTE is aligning the curriculum with the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. After further discussions with the Ministry of Education and the NCTE Governing Council, more details about the changes and implementation will be clarified.
This reform marks a major shift in the Indian education system, aiming to produce skilled and well-trained teachers to elevate the quality of education nationwide.
