Rajasthan’s Bizarre Tradition: A Funeral Procession for the Living

NEWS CHARIOT:-In a strange and unique tradition observed in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, a living person is carried on a bike and paraded across the town as part of a grand ritual. This peculiar custom, known as “Dola,” has been practiced for over 400 years and is conducted a week after the Holi festival.

The ritual begins at the Chittorgarh Fort, where a person lies on a bier and is carried through the town. As the procession moves forward, locals participate by throwing colors and playing musical instruments. The person on the bier, although participating in a mock funeral, occasionally sits up, drinks water, and interacts with others during the journey, adding to the uniqueness of the ritual.

The procession concludes at a temple where the person suddenly jumps off the bier and runs away, symbolizing the end of the ritual. Following this, the bier is ceremonially burned behind the temple. This unusual event attracts thousands of spectators from different parts of Rajasthan who gather to witness the fascinating tradition.

Interestingly, women are not allowed to participate in this ceremony. Another peculiar aspect is that participants engage in mock cursing and verbal abuse, which is considered part of the ritual. The day before the procession, locals prepare special delicacies and host a theatrical performance to mark the occasion.

Locals believe that performing this ritual helps eliminate evil and negativity from society. Recently, a video of this extraordinary “funeral procession” went viral on social media, drawing curiosity and fascination from across the country.
