Chandramouliswarar Temple : A Divine Powerhouse in Tamil Nadu

NEWS CHARIOT : In the village of Thiruvakkarai, located in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, stands the renowned Chandramouliswarar Temple. This temple, which has been an object of devotion for over two thousand years, is widely recognized for its divine significance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it features a unique and rare form of Shiva’s Lingam, representing the three forms of the Trinity—Tatpurusha, Aghora, and Vamadeva.

Historically, the temple is believed to have been constructed during the 9th century by Aditya Chola, a notable Chola king. The temple complex boasts a majestic seven-tiered Rajagopuram, with each corner of the temple showcasing distinct divine features. Among the temple’s key attractions is its association with the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Kali.

The temple is also known for its connection to the legend of Vakasura, a demon who terrorized the world but was ultimately defeated by Lord Vishnu. The Vishnu deity here is depicted holding the Sudarshana Chakra, symbolizing his role in vanquishing the demon. Goddess Kali also plays a significant role in this temple, where she is believed to have prevented Vakasura’s blood from spilling on the ground, which could have created more demons. To appease her fierce form, Adi Shankaracharya is said to have consecrated a Sri Chakra beneath her feet.

The temple is highly revered by devotees, especially those seeking relief during the challenging Shani (Saturn) phase of their lives. It is also a favored place for politicians, who believe that the divine blessings here can help them overcome obstacles and emerge victorious.
