Poonam Gupta Appointed as RBI Deputy Governor for Three-Year Term

NEWS CHARIOT:-The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed noted economist Poonam Gupta as its new Deputy Governor for a term of three years. The decision was announced on Wednesday, marking a significant addition to the RBI’s leadership team.

Gupta, an internationally recognized economist, brings extensive experience in macroeconomics and policy research. She is currently serving as the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and has previously worked as an economist at the World Bank. Additionally, she is a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and has been leading the Advisory Council for the 16th Finance Commission as its convener.

Gupta holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA. She also earned a Master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. In 1998, she was awarded the EXIM Bank Award for her doctoral research in international economics.

Her work has spanned global financial institutions and policy-making bodies, giving her a well-rounded perspective on economic trends, financial regulations, and policy frameworks. With her expertise, she is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s monetary policy and economic strategies during her tenure at RBI.

With Gupta’s appointment, the RBI now has a total of four Deputy Governors. The other three officials currently serving in the position are Swaminathan,JT. Rabi Sankar, M. Rajeshwar Rao.

Her inclusion in the leadership team is expected to strengthen RBI’s policy-making capabilities, particularly in areas of economic research, financial stability, and banking regulation.

Gupta’s appointment comes at a critical time when the Indian economy is navigating global uncertainties, inflation concerns, and financial sector reforms. Her international experience and academic rigor are likely to contribute significantly to RBI’s decision-making process in the coming years.
