Good News for Farmers from IMD: Above-Average Rainfall Expected in 2025!

NEWS CHARIOT:-The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has shared a positive outlook for farmers across the country, forecasting above-average rainfall in 2025. According to the department’s projections, India will receive an estimated 105% of the average rainfall, signaling a year of potentially beneficial weather for agriculture.

The IMD highlighted that most regions of the country, excluding certain areas in the northwest and the southern peninsula, are expected to receive more rainfall than usual. While some parts of the country may experience below-average rainfall, the overall picture points towards a favorable monsoon season. The department also stated that neutral El Niño conditions are anticipated during the monsoon period, which is expected to support stable and conducive rainfall patterns.

In India, the monsoon season typically begins on June 1 in Kerala and lasts until mid-September, with rainfall being a critical factor for agricultural productivity. The IMD uses a 50-year average rainfall of 87 cm as a benchmark for predicting the seasonal weather. Based on this, rainfall between 96% and 104% of the average is considered normal. The forecast for 2025, predicting 105% rainfall, suggests that conditions will be slightly better than usual, which could provide significant relief to the agriculture sector.

This forecast is particularly important for India’s farming community, as a large portion of the country’s cultivated land—approximately 52%—relies on monsoon rains. The expected surplus rainfall will likely boost crop yields, improve water availability for irrigation, and help fill crucial reservoirs used for drinking water and power generation. This, in turn, could have a positive impact on rural economies and contribute to overall food security.
