Kanch Gachibowli Land Issue Gains Momentum, IAS Smita Sabharwal Receives Police Notice

NEWS CHARIOT:-The ongoing controversy surrounding the lands in Kanch Gachibowli continues to escalate. The matter, which has already reached the Supreme Court, saw the Court instruct the state government to refrain from taking any action on the disputed lands.
Recently, several individuals, including senior IAS officer Smita Sabharwal, have been issued notices by the police for sharing photos and videos related to the contentious land. Smita Sabharwal responded to the notice, assuring full cooperation with the police investigation. However, in her response, she raised a significant question, which could spark further controversy.
In her statement, Smita Sabharwal pointed out that the post she shared had been re-shared by nearly 2,000 people on social media. She directly questioned whether similar action would be taken against all of them. If not, she argued, it would be clear that she was being specifically targeted. She emphasized that the law is meant to apply equally to all, with no one above it, which she reiterated in a post on her X account.
The issue began when, on March 31, Smita Sabharwal reposted an image on the ‘Hi Hyderabad’ X account. The image showed a peacock and a deer observing bulldozers near the Mushroom Rock in the University of Hyderabad. The post quickly went viral, gathering responses from thousands of people. However, the police have not disclosed the specifics of the notice issued to her.
According to Gachibowli police, the notice was issued under Section 179 of the BNSS (Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita) Act due to the sharing of AI-generated images regarding the destruction of 400 acres of land.
The spread of AI-generated photos has sparked criticism of the government. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently expressed concern about the issue. In response, authorities have begun taking action against individuals who shared such images and videos, including issuing notices to Smita Sabharwal and others involved.
