IMD Issues Heatwave Alert Across India; Above-Normal Monsoon Predicted

NEWS CHARIOT:-The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for several parts of the country, cautioning residents about rising temperatures and severe weather conditions through April 25. Northern and central India are expected to bear the brunt of the heatwave, with yellow alerts in place for southern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Vidarbha.

In addition to these regions, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and some areas of Madhya Pradesh are also likely to witness extreme heat. The IMD has advised people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and to stay hydrated.

While central and western India face scorching heat, the northeastern states are likely to see contrasting weather. The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Mizoram. Parts of southern India may also experience strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms. Similar lightning activity is expected in certain areas of Uttarakhand.

In a relief to the agricultural sector, the IMD has delivered a positive outlook for the upcoming Southwest Monsoon season (June–September). According to long-range forecasts, India is likely to receive above-normal rainfall this year. Historical data from 1971 to 2020 indicates an average rainfall of 87 cm during the monsoon; this year, rainfall could reach up to 105% of the normal.

Additionally, the department reports a 56% probability of receiving above-normal to excess rainfall in various parts of the country. Crucially, the absence of El Niño conditions is expected to support a strong monsoon.

Experts also highlight low snowfall in the Himalayas and Euro-Asian regions during December to March as a favorable factor for increased rainfall. However, the IMD has warned that some regions such as Northeast India, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar may receive below-normal rainfall during the season. As India braces for extreme summer weather, both challenges and opportunities lie ahead, especially for farmers and those dependent on seasonal rainfall.
