Lyricist Anantha Sriram’s Strong Remarks Against Telugu Cinema’s Portrayal of Hindu Dharma

NEWS CHARIOT (Andhra Pradesh,JAN.6) :  Renowned Telugu lyricist Anantha Sriram made controversial remarks about the Telugu film industry, accusing it of disrespecting and distorting Hindu Dharma. Speaking at the Hindu Shankharavam Sabha organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Kesara Palli, Vijayawada, he expressed deep anguish over the alleged misrepresentation of Hindu traditions and scriptures in Telugu cinema.

Call for Boycott

Sriram urged audiences to boycott films that demean Hindu culture and values. As someone from the industry, he stated that his silence on these issues would go against the principles of Dharma.

Criticism of Scriptural Distortions

The lyricist criticized filmmakers for altering ancient epics and mythologies to suit cinematic narratives. He pointed out examples where characters like Karna and Arjuna were misrepresented, highlighting the recent movie “Kalki,” which, according to him, portrayed Karna as superior to Arjuna, deviating from scriptural truths.

Misuse of Hindu Symbols

Sriram lamented the misuse of sacred chants like “Hare Krishna, Hare Rama” in item songs, referencing the song “Dum Maro Dum.” He called it a blatant disrespect to the ISKCON movement’s spiritual efforts.

Historical Misrepresentation

He also criticized movies for portraying revered historical figures in a poor light, such as Bajirao being reduced to a romantic hero in “Bajirao Mastani.”

Personal Stand

Recounting a personal incident, Sriram revealed he had vowed 15 years ago not to write lyrics for a music director who insisted on removing the word “Brahmanda Nayakudu” from a song.

Sriram’s comments sparked a heated discussion about the film industry’s responsibility to uphold cultural and religious values while maintaining creative freedom. The event was attended by VHP leaders, Hindu religious representatives, and cultural enthusiasts from both Telugu states.
