BC Leaders Demand Caste Census, Ninth Schedule Status for Telangana BC Bill

NEWS CHARIOT:-The BC Azadi Federation staged a Satyagraha Deeksha at Shankarapatnam mandal headquarters in Karimnagar district, demanding a nationwide caste census and the inclusion of the Telangana BC Bill in the Ninth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The protest was led by State Spokesperson Bongoni Abhilash Goud, supporting the ongoing 15-day hunger strike in Delhi led by Federation National President Jakkani Sanjay Kumar.

During the protest, the leaders highlighted the ongoing issues faced by Other Backward Classes (OBCs), who comprise more than 50% of India’s population but continue to be severely underrepresented in education, employment, and legislative bodies. They emphasized that reservations for OBCs, similar to those for women, could only be effectively ensured through a caste-based census, which has not been conducted since 1931. Despite being one of the largest social groups in the country, OBCs remain marginalized due to a lack of accurate demographic data.

The leaders also demanded the approval of the Telangana government’s proposal for 42% reservations in local bodies, education, and employment for OBCs, stressing that the bill should be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. They referred to the Kamareddy Declaration, a resolution passed to ensure OBC welfare and adequate representation in various sectors.

A significant concern raised during the protest was the indefinite hunger strike by BC leader Bathula Siddeshwar Patel, who has been fasting for 13 days in Delhi. With his health deteriorating, the leaders expressed alarm over the government’s lack of response and warned of escalated protests if any harm comes to Patel.

The protest also highlighted the silence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the issue, while other allies in the INDIA and NDA coalitions have shown support for the demand. Local leaders, community heads, and activists joined the protest, vowing to continue their struggle for OBC rights until justice is served.
