The founder of Zoho Corporation, valued at nearly ₹28,000 crores, still chooses to ride a bicycle and live in his native village — far from the trappings of luxury.
Born in 1968 in Thanjavur, Vembu hails from a humble background. His father worked as a stenographer at the Chennai High Court, while his mother was a homemaker. Educated in a government school, Vembu’s academic brilliance earned him the 27th rank in the prestigious IIT-JEE, after which he pursued engineering at IIT Madras and completed his higher studies at Princeton University in the United States.
Vembu began his professional career at Qualcomm in 1994, but his entrepreneurial spirit led him to leave his lucrative job. His brother was already running a software firm, AdventNet, in Chennai. During the 2001 economic slowdown, the company faced major setbacks. Seizing the opportunity, Vembu acquired the domain name “Zoho” and merged AdventNet into it in 2009.
Under his leadership, Zoho grew into a global SaaS powerhouse, hitting $1 billion in revenue by 2021. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zoho reported strong profits, and its growth trajectory has continued ever since.
Despite his massive success, Sridhar Vembu has remained grounded. He lives in his village, wears traditional Tamil attire, and prefers cycling over luxury vehicles. His minimalist lifestyle and philanthropic initiatives have earned him widespread respect.
According to Forbes, Vembu ranks 55th among India’s richest individuals. In recognition of his contributions to technology and rural development, he was honored with the Padma Shri.
At a time when many lose themselves in wealth, Sridhar Vembu remains an icon of integrity and inspiration — proving that success doesn’t have to come at the cost of simplicity.
