Case registered against pet shop owner in Karimnagar

NEWS CHARIOT (Karimnagar, Nov.18) : The police officials of the Karimnagar II-town registered the case against the pet shop owner on the complaint lodged by the Animal Welfare Activist A.Goutham alleging that the pet shop owner violated the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017 here in Karimnagar.

In the complaint Goutham alleged that the pet shop owners identified as Mohammad Ameer and Nikhat Shaheen were running a pet shop in the name of ‘Minar Pet Shop and Flowers’.

They are selling the birds, rabbits, exotic birds, fantail pigeons, love birds and other small rare birds which are kept in the cages in an overcrowded manner, in unhygienic conditions, thereby causing pain, starvation and thirst to them.

Depending on the demand the birds have in the market, they are selling the birds ranging from Rs.200 to Rs.1,000 and are treating them with cruelty by violating the rules mentioned in Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCAA). So receiving the complaint, the police registered a case under PCAA.175 BNSS r/w 3(5) BNS against the pet shop owners.

Goutham said that he filed the complaint in the month of August at II town police station against the pet shop located opposite to Geetha Bhavan. When the police did not take any action, he filed a petition in the III Additional JMFC Court which ordered the police to register an FIR.

Receiving the orders, the police registered the case on November 2, but were reluctant to seize the animals and take action against the pet shop owner.

Later when he met the ACP Karimnagar town Narendar and with an intervention by Menaka Gandhi, finally took action along with seizing the several animals including around 70 birds which were later placed in the custody of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Karimnagar.
