Curator Lays Foundation for New Works at Kakatiya Zoo Funds Sanctioned on Minister Konda Surekha’s Initiative

NEWS CHARIOT:-The long-neglected Warangal Kakatiya Zoo Park is now on the path to transformation, thanks to the active involvement of Forest Minister Konda Surekha. Established in 1985 across 48 acres as a ‘mini zoo’ by then-Governor Shankar Dayal Sharma, the zoo has remained stagnant for decades. However, fresh developments are now underway after years of inaction.

With a current display of around 470 wild animals and birds, the zoo now attracts 1,800–2,000 visitors on weekends, up from earlier figures of 1,000–1,200. Annually, it generates an income of Rs. 24 lakh. Despite its strategic location in the Warangal tricity with a population exceeding 10 lakhs, the zoo had been overlooked by successive governments.

Minister Konda Surekha’s direct initiative led to the arrival of two big tigers, wild buffaloes, hog deer, and barking deer. She also personally sponsored Rs. 2 lakhs for the adoption and care of four wild animals. Plans are underway to bring in white tigers and lions, with proposals being drafted.

A significant concern—waterlogging due to poor drainage—has also been addressed. Located at a lower elevation than surrounding colonies, the zoo has long suffered from flooding during monsoons, affecting both animals and visitors. Minister Surekha ordered the construction of a 1-km underground drainage system to resolve this.

In addition, a new curator building is under construction. With the first phase of funding already sanctioned, development is proceeding rapidly, giving the Kakatiya Zoo a long-overdue facelift.
