Financial Crisis Casts Shadow Over Panchayat Polls as Aspirants Hesitate

NEWS CHARIOT:-The state government is grappling with a severe financial crisis. Officials claim that the government is burdened with paying interest on the massive debts left by the previous administration, amounting to crores every month.
Meanwhile, those aspiring to contest the upcoming panchayat elections are facing disappointment. Reports suggest that former sarpanches have pending bills ranging from 20 to 50 lakh rupees, discouraging many candidates from investing heavily in elections. This has led to uncertainty about whether candidates will step forward or withdraw from the race.
Despite 13 months passing since the last panchayat term ended, elections have yet to be conducted. Aspirants who were eagerly awaiting the polls are now hesitant due to delays and the current economic scenario. Adding to the dilemma, former sarpanches are struggling financially as they await payments for works undertaken in their villages. With the state treasury running empty, concerns arise about whether newly elected representatives will receive funds for development.
Without elected representatives like sarpanches, MPTCs, and ward members, governance in villages has come to a halt. Residents face difficulties in conveying their grievances to the government, as there are no local leaders to advocate for their issues.
Beyond elections, ruling and opposition party leaders are reportedly distancing themselves from their party cadres. BRS and Congress workers express frustration over being neglected. The absence of strong leadership is making the grassroots cadre hesitant about contesting in the elections.
With the state treasury in crisis, there is widespread uncertainty over whether funds will be allocated for village development even after elections. Many aspirants fear contesting, unsure whether their efforts will bear fruit if financial support remains elusive.
