Gandhi” of Ailapur: A Man Who Never Wears a Shirt, Regardless of the Season
NEWS CHARIOT (JAGTYALA,JAN.8) : Mukkera Bakkaiah, a 50-year-old man from Ailapur village in Korutla Mandal, Jagtial district, has become a local legend for his unusual habit of never wearing a shirt. Despite the coldest winters, intense summer heat, or monsoon rains, Bakkaiah has lived his entire life without a shirt, earning him the nickname “Gandhi” from the villagers.
Bakkaiah, who refuses to wear a shirt due to discomfort and sweating, developed this habit during his childhood. His family and others tried to convince him to wear one, but he remained firm in his decision. Even after adulthood, marriage, and becoming a ward member, he continued his shirtless lifestyle. He uses thick blankets to keep warm in the winter months and has never allowed the weather to dictate his way of living.
Former village Sarpanch P. Radha and village secretary Rajendar both shared that Bakkaiah’s shirtless nature had become well-known across the region. His unique choice has made him an intriguing figure in his village, where people often refer to him as “Gandhi” for his resemblance to the leader’s minimalist clothing.
Bakkaiah, who lives alone and works on his brother’s farm, has remained consistent in his personal preference, becoming a local curiosity. His lifestyle exemplifies his strong individualism, and he continues to be a source of fascination for those around him.
