Gas Cylinder Prices Hiked by Rs.50: Telangana Faces Monthly Burden of Rs.71 Crore

NEWS CHARIOT:-In a move that adds to the financial strain of the common man, the central government has increased the price of domestic LPG gas cylinders by Rs.50. The revised prices came into effect nationwide on Tuesday, impacting millions of households across India.
The price hike is expected to significantly affect Telangana, where LPG usage is notably high. Estimates suggest that around 1 crore cylinders are purchased in the state every month. As a result, the cumulative additional burden on LPG consumers in the state amounts to Rs.50 crore per month.
The decision comes at a time when households are already grappling with inflation and rising living costs. The price hike is anticipated to heavily impact low- and middle-income families, particularly those who fall outside government welfare schemes.
However, the Telangana government has reaffirmed its commitment to shielding beneficiaries of its flagship Maha Lakshmi Scheme from this price rise. Under the scheme, 42.90 lakh beneficiaries receive LPG cylinders at a subsidized rate of Rs.500. Despite the central government’s hike, the Telangana government has promised to continue providing cylinders at the same rate.
To do so, the state will bear the additional cost of Rs.50 per cylinder and directly credit the subsidy to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. This move will cost the state exchequer an additional Rs.21.45 crore each month.
In total, Telangana will now shoulder a monthly burden of approximately Rs.71 crore—Rs.50 crore affecting general consumers and Rs.21.45 crore as part of the subsidy under the Maha Lakshmi Scheme.
On the other hand, nearly 99.82 lakh LPG consumers who are not covered under the scheme will receive no subsidy and must pay the full increased price. For these consumers, the hike translates to a direct rise in monthly household expenses, adding pressure to already stretched budgets.
As fuel prices continue to rise, the impact on essential commodities and daily living costs is expected to be far-reaching.
