GBS Syndrome: A Rare and Alarming Case Reported in Telangana

NEWS CHARIOT : A recent case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, has caused concern in Telangana after a 25-year-old woman from Siddipet district was diagnosed with it. The case comes after several reports from Pune and surrounding areas in Maharashtra, where the syndrome had created a stir.
The woman began experiencing severe fever and viral infections a week ago. As her condition worsened, she gradually lost strength in her hands and legs, ultimately becoming unable to walk or move. Doctors in Siddipet initially treated her but recommended transfer to a private hospital in Hyderabad due to her deteriorating condition. She is now under ventilator support, with doctors working to stabilize her.
Despite initial concerns, doctors clarified that neither the patient nor her family had traveled to Pune or any other region recently. According to Dr. Praveen Kumar, a neurologist at KIMS, GBS cases like these are not unusual during the rainy season, as viral and bacterial infections can weaken the immune system, making some individuals vulnerable to this syndrome.
Dr. Kumar explained that in some instances, the syndrome could be mild and recover within a week, especially if treated promptly. However, in severe cases, recovery may take up to six months. The syndrome is more likely to affect those with weakened immunity, and in extremely rare cases, it can become fatal. Thankfully, GBS is not contagious, so it doesn’t spread from one person to another.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS):
- Weakness in the legs and arms
- Difficulty walking or moving
- Problems with speech and breathing
- Swelling in the fingers, arms, and neck area
- Difficulty with balance and coordination
- Changes in heart rate or blood pressure
If these symptoms are accompanied by stomach pain, diarrhea, or vomiting, immediate medical consultation is recommended.
The medical team urges everyone to be vigilant if experiencing any of these symptoms, especially after a viral or bacterial infection, and seek timely treatment.
