Intense Debate Over Work Hours in India

NEWS CHARIOT:-A nationwide debate has erupted over work hours after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy suggested a 70-hour work week, and L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan pushed for 90-hour work weeks. These statements have triggered outrage in the IT sector, where employees are already struggling to maintain a work-life balance.

Tech professionals, who initially voiced concerns on social media, have now taken their protests to the streets. A recent demonstration at Bangalore’s Freedom Park gained further momentum with support from the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), adding a new layer to the controversy.

Amid this debate, some companies are pressuring the Karnataka government to extend daily work hours from 8 to 14. In response, IT employees have taken a stand, asserting that a healthy work-life balance is a fundamental right.

The unrest has drawn political and industry attention. Last year, IT employees submitted a memorandum to the Karnataka Labor Minister, highlighting workplace issues and the push for extended shifts. However, instead of resolving these concerns, companies are increasing pressure for longer working hours.

In frustration, employees attempted to burn effigies in protest, but the police intervened to prevent further escalation. The movement, which started in Karnataka, is now gaining traction nationwide, with discussions on social media about its possible expansion.

As protests grow, the debate raises critical questions about employee rights, work-life balance, and corporate expectations in India’s IT sector. Whether the government or companies will address these concerns remains to be seen, but for now, employees are determined to fight for their rights.
