Kaleshwaram Project Commission Concludes Hearing on Deficiencies: L&T Representatives Provide Key Insights

NEWS CHARIOT : The Commission investigating the deficiencies in the Kaleshwaram project concluded its hearing on Friday. Key representatives from L&T, including Project Director Ramakrishna Raju, Vice Chairman Suresh, and Rajinisha, appeared before the Commission to shed light on critical issues concerning the project.
During the inquiry, the Commission posed several questions regarding the project’s construction quality, particularly concerning Block 7 and the collapse of structures. L&T representatives made significant revelations about the issues faced during the project execution. When asked about the quality of construction, L&T officials stated that they adhered to 100% quality standards. They clarified that the construction of the Medigadda Barrage followed the designs and drawings provided by the Irrigation Department. However, they noted that the water flow velocity exceeded the design estimates, which led to damage to the apron and CC blocks at the base of the barrage. L&T officials suggested that this excessive water flow contributed to the collapse of the structures in the project.
L&T representatives informed the Commission that the issues at the Medigadda Barrage began after the first season of water storage. They also mentioned that despite requesting the Irrigation Department for revised designs to address these issues, they had not received any response in the last four years. According to them, had the deficiencies been addressed in 2019, the Medigadda Barrage would not have suffered such damage. They also stated that the barrage had never been empty since its construction, and that the continuous problems might have affected Block 7 in particular.
L&T also clarified that no sub-contracts were awarded during the construction of the Medigadda Barrage. They confirmed that no additional funds were paid by the government for the Kafir Dam portion of the project. They further mentioned that a certificate of completion for the barrage had been issued, and that the defect liability period had already ended.
However, when the Commission inquired whether repairs could be made to the collapsed block, L&T officials provided differing responses, indicating that the situation might be more complex than initially thought.
The hearing has raised more questions about the project’s execution, with officials continuing to investigate the reasons behind the structural failures and seeking solutions to the ongoing issues.
