Karachi Bakery in Mozamjahi Market

NEWS CHARIOT:-Karachi Bakery, a well-known bakery in Hyderabad, was named after the city of Karachi. It was founded by Khan Chand Ramnani, a Sindhi migrant who moved to Hyderabad during the partition of India in 1947. Facing the challenges of migration, he started the bakery as a new beginning in India.

In 1953, the first Karachi Bakery in Hyderabad was opened at Mozamjahi Market, next to Seena Bakery. The name “Karachi” was chosen as a tribute to his homeland, from where he was forced to migrate due to the partition-related violence. Over the years, the bakery gained immense popularity for its biscuits, cakes, and other baked goods.

In 2019, following the Pulwama attack, there was a surge in anti-Pakistan sentiment in India. Some people raised objections to the name “Karachi Bakery,” arguing that it symbolized Pakistan. Protestors demanded that the name be changed to “Bharatiya Karachi Bakery” to reflect an Indian identity.

To counter the backlash, the bakery owners displayed the Indian national flag outside their store to express their patriotism. They clarified that Karachi Bakery had no association with Pakistan and that its founders were victims of partition, forced to leave their homeland due to violence. They firmly stated that the bakery was an Indian establishment and that they had no intentions of changing its name.

Despite the controversy, Karachi Bakery remains an integral part of Hyderabad’s culinary heritage, known for its rich history and high-quality products.
