Media Must Reflect Society, Not Just Events: Prof. B. Suresh Lal

NEWS CHARIOT : Media should not merely report events, but reflect the broader picture of society, its political shifts, and public sentiment, said Prof. B. Suresh Lal, Director of the School of Distance Learning at Kakatiya University. He addressed journalism students during a farewell event for the 2022–2024 batch of the MA Journalism program at the university’s Distance Education Centre.

The program, chaired by Journalism Coordinator Dr. Sangani Malleshwar, began with a moment of silence to honor those killed in the recent terrorist attacks in Pahalgam.

Prof. Suresh Lal emphasized that journalists must be conscious of their role in shaping a society free of poverty, illiteracy, and hunger. “Journalists need to be watchful, responsible, and socially aware,” he noted. He also highlighted how print, electronic, and social media now disseminate global events instantly, reaching even the remotest sections of society.

He advised students to develop creativity, strong communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure — essential traits for modern journalists. Referring to the influence of AI and machine learning, he pointed out how emerging technologies are reshaping the media landscape.

Guest speaker Dr. Venugopal Reddy from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University stressed the ethical responsibility journalists have toward society and their families. “Studying journalism is akin to studying society,” he remarked.

Other speakers included Dr. Venkataramana, who recalled Warangal’s legacy in journalism, and faculty members who encouraged students about career prospects in media.
