Meet the Brave Women Behind Operation Sindoor: Colonel Sophia Qureshi & Wing Commander Vyomika Singh

NEWS CHARIOT:-Amid the high-level media briefing on Operation Sindoor, the two women in uniform stole the spotlight. Colonel Sophia Qureshi of the Indian Army and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force stood alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri as the nation learned about India’s decisive strike on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Their presence not only reflected operational authority but also inspired pride across the nation.

Colonel Sophia Qureshi, a native of Gujarat, hails from a family with a strong military tradition. Influenced by her grandfather and father, who both served in the army, Sophia joined the Indian Army in 1999 through the Officers Training Academy. She has served in various signal regiments, particularly in counter-terrorism zones.

A trailblazer in many respects, Colonel Qureshi made history in March 2016 as the first Indian woman officer to lead an Army contingent during “Exercise Force 18,” one of Asia’s largest multinational military exercises. With participants from 18 countries including the US, China, Russia, Japan, and ASEAN nations, her leadership marked a turning point for women in the armed forces.

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, a decorated combat pilot, has logged over 2,500 hours of flying experience in challenging terrains—from high-altitude mountains to coastal zones. An expert in combat helicopter missions, she has led several rescue and relief operations, notably during disasters in Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh.

Vyomika’s passion for flying began in the sixth grade and never wavered. After completing engineering, she joined the Air Force and pursued her dream of becoming a combat pilot. Her decision-making under pressure, particularly during missions in treacherous weather and hostile zones, speaks volumes of her skill and courage.

Together, these two officers exemplify the strength and precision of India’s armed forces—and are symbols of women’s growing role in national defense.
