Mehul Choksi Confirmed to Be in Belgium in PNB Loan Fraud Case

NEWS CHARIOT:-Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi, one of India’s most wanted accused in the ₹13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, has been confirmed to be residing in Belgium, according to an official statement from the Belgian government.

In a statement, Belgium’s Foreign Ministry acknowledged Choksi’s presence in the country but declined to comment further on individual cases. However, it assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Belgian officials also confirmed that the Indian government has approached them regarding Choksi’s extradition.

Choksi, 65, is accused alongside his nephew, Nirav Modi, in the multi-crore banking scam that rocked India’s financial sector in 2018. While Choksi is currently in Belgium, Indian authorities are also pursuing the extradition of Nirav Modi, who is detained in London.

Reports indicate that Choksi is living in Antwerp with his wife, Preeti Choksi, who is a Belgian citizen. It is believed that he recently traveled abroad for medical treatment.

The PNB fraud case came to light in 2018 when authorities uncovered a scam worth over ₹13,500 crore involving fraudulent letters of undertaking. Following the revelations, both Choksi and Nirav Modi fled India—Choksi to Antigua and Barbuda, and Modi to the UK.

During a recent visit to India, Antigua and Barbuda’s Foreign Minister, E.P. Chet Greene, stated that Choksi is no longer in their country and had reportedly left for medical reasons. He reiterated that Choksi remains a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda and assured that both governments are working together on the case.

The Indian government has been actively pursuing Choksi and Nirav Modi’s return to face trial. With Belgium now confirming Choksi’s presence, India’s diplomatic and legal efforts for his extradition are expected to gain momentum.
