NATU KODI (DESI CHICKEN) GAINS POPULARITY AS A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE, ESPECIALLY DURING SANKRANTI FESTIVAL

NEWS CHARIOT : Natu Kodi (Desi Chicken), known for its natural growth and rich nutritional benefits, has seen a surge in demand, particularly around the Sankranti festival. Unlike regular broiler chicken, Natu Kodi is favored by many for its taste and health benefits, which has led to its rising popularity among meat lovers, especially in rural and urban areas alike.

In villages, unemployed youth are increasingly turning to Natu Kodi farming as a source of livelihood. Compared to the risks involved with raising broiler chickens, the farming of Natu Kodi is less risky, and it doesn’t require heavy use of medications. Natu Kodi can be easily raised in backyards, between houses, and even in sheds, making it a convenient and sustainable option.

Traditionally, Natu Kodi farming was common in rural households, but with changing lifestyles, people began preferring easier options like broiler chicken due to the challenges of raising Natu Kodi such as space and odor. However, the trend is reversing now, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, as people are more inclined towards healthier, protein-rich foods to boost their immunity.

The demand for Natu Kodi meat increases during festivals like Sankranti, with prices seeing a significant hike. Normally, a rooster (Kodiketta) is sold for around Rs. 300, and a hen (Kodipunju) for Rs. 400. However, during Sankranti, prices can rise to Rs. 500 for a rooster and Rs. 700 for a hen due to the high demand for festive cooking.

The growing preference for Natu Kodi is also linked to its perceived health benefits, as it is considered to be a leaner, healthier alternative to goat and mutton, which are higher in fat content. The rich flavor and nutritious content of Natu Kodi meat have made it a popular choice among health-conscious consumers.

As more people become aware of the health benefits and taste of Natu Kodi, demand continues to rise, making it a thriving business for many rural and urban farmers alike.
