New Air Conditioner Subsidy Scheme Set to Launch Under NDA Government

NEWS CHARIOT:-The NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been making waves with its series of welfare schemes aimed at making essential commodities more accessible to citizens. In line with this initiative, a new subsidy scheme for air conditioners (ACs) is reportedly in the works, offering financial relief to the public during the scorching summer months.
The Prime Minister’s Air Conditioner Scheme (PM AC Scheme), although still in its preliminary stages, is expected to be rolled out soon. Once implemented, the scheme will provide subsidies on air conditioners for a wide range of people across the country. The focus is on making ACs more affordable to those who now consider them a necessity due to rising summer temperatures, which have been intensifying year after year.
As electricity consumption from ACs has surged—jumping from 8.4 million units in 2021-22 to 11 million units in 2022-23—the government aims to tackle both energy usage and rising electricity bills through the PM AC Scheme. The initiative will provide subsidies for high-efficiency 5-star rated ACs, which are known to reduce electricity consumption significantly.
A similar subsidy scheme has already been successfully implemented in Delhi, where consumers can exchange low-star rated ACs for 5-star models at a subsidized rate. This has been particularly helpful in promoting energy-efficient ACs, although the high price of 5-star models has been a barrier for many middle-class families. The new PM AC Scheme seeks to address this issue by allowing people to trade in their older, less-efficient units for more energy-efficient models at a lower cost.
Under the scheme, consumers will return their low-star rated ACs to authorized dealers, who will provide them with coupons. These coupons can then be used to purchase 5-star ACs at subsidized prices. The collected low-star units will be refurbished and upgraded by companies into 5-star models, creating a recycling system aimed at reducing electricity consumption. While the launch date for the scheme remains unclear, it is expected to be a game-changer in providing affordable, energy-efficient cooling solutions for households across India.
