Night Patrols Replace Rest for Vikarabad Residents Amid Rising Thefts

NEWS CHARIOT:-Residents of Manikantha Nagar in Vikarabad district are living in fear following a spate of burglaries in their locality. Despite being employed as government officers, teachers, and police personnel, many now spend their nights patrolling the streets with sticks, trying to guard their homes due to the lack of adequate police response.

The colony recently witnessed back-to-back thefts. On the 7th of this month, two homes were broken into, with thieves escaping with gold, silver, and cash. The next day, another house was targeted. These incidents have left the community anxious and restless, especially given their proximity to both the District Police Office and the District Collector’s Office.

Locals say that while their jobs keep them busy during the day, fear of burglars keeps them up at night. Women patrol the streets until 11 PM, after which the men take over until morning. Thieves are not only breaking into locked houses but are also stealing from properties with people inside — including motorcycles and fuel left outside.

Residents believe the colony’s location near railway tracks is a major factor. They allege that thieves from outside areas are walking along the tracks, committing thefts, and then escaping through the railway station by catching outbound trains.

This isn’t an isolated issue. Several colonies in Vikarabad have reported similar incidents, with the culprits escaping before police arrive. Despite complaints, residents claim police are dismissive. “Is it our job to guard your homes?” some officers reportedly said when approached.

Adding to the problem is poor street lighting, which gives burglars cover during nighttime hours. Residents are appealing to the municipal authorities to install proper lighting and to the district SP to take urgent action. They are demanding increased patrolling, especially near the railway station, and special surveillance to curb the growing threat of thefts in the town.
