Padma Shri Awardee ‘Vanajeevi’ Ramayya Passes Away
NEWS CHARIOT:-Environmental crusader and Padma Shri awardee ‘Vanajeevi’ Ramayya passed away while undergoing treatment at the Khammam Government Hospital. He had been suffering from health complications for some time. Known for his unwavering dedication to afforestation, Ramayya earned national recognition after planting over one crore saplings across Telangana and beyond.
Born in Reddipalli village of Khammam Rural Mandal, Ramayya’s passion for nature began at an early age. He actively promoted the importance of growing trees, urging people to protect greenery. Over the years, he became a symbol of grassroots environmental activism. In recognition of his tireless work, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri award in 2016.
Ramayya’s commitment to environmental preservation was more than symbolic—he devoted his entire life to it. So deep was his connection to nature that he legally adopted the name ‘Vanajeevi,’ meaning ‘forest dweller.’ His home was often seen surrounded by saplings, and he carried seeds wherever he went.
Throughout his journey, Ramayya received numerous honors. He was awarded the Vanamitra Award by the Center for Media Services in 2005, an honorary doctorate from the Universal Global Peace organization, and the Vana Seva Award from the Indian government in 1995. Local institutions like the Khammam Rotary Club also celebrated his contribution.
His inspirational life has found its way into school curricula. The Government of Maharashtra included his biography in Telugu textbooks for students, while the Telangana State Government introduced his story in the Class 6 Social Studies and Class 9 Telugu textbooks, ensuring future generations learn about his legacy.
Even within his family, Ramayya’s love for trees echoed—he named his grandchildren after plants and flowers. Names like Chandanapushpa, Haritha Lavanya, Kabandhapushpa, and Vanashree stand as living symbols of his love for nature.
Vanajeevi Ramayya’s life remains a shining example of environmental stewardship. His legacy will continue to inspire many to work towards a greener, healthier planet.
