Pregnant Woman Dies During Wedding; Family Alleges Medical Negligence

NEWS CHARIOT:-What began as a day of celebration turned into a tragedy for the family of Pamarthi Mareswara Rao and Jyotsna, a couple residing in Kotapada, Chintalapudi mandal, Eluru district. On Wednesday night, Mareswara Rao’s younger brother Chenna Rao got married, but on the same day, Jyotsna began experiencing severe stomach pain that would prove fatal.
Jyotsna was first taken to a private hospital in Chintalapudi, where doctors advised that she be shifted to another hospital for better treatment. With family celebrations underway, Mareswara Rao quickly informed his relatives and rushed his wife to Sattupalli in Khammam district.
In the evening, Jyotsna underwent a scan at a local scanning center. Medical tests revealed a critical condition — she was pregnant, but the fetus had developed in the intestine instead of the uterus, leading to a rupture and internal bleeding. Doctors at a nearby private emergency hospital informed Mareswara Rao that an immediate operation was required. He promptly paid Rs. 40,000 to admit her.
A team of three doctors, including the chief physician, performed surgery that night. Tragically, Jyotsna passed away early Thursday morning, shortly after speaking to her husband. She leaves behind a two-year-old child.
Following the devastating news, relatives and family members staged a protest at the hospital, accusing the doctors of negligence and claiming the surgery was the cause of death. The local police intervened and calmed the agitated crowd.
In response, the hospital authorities stated that Jyotsna was already in a critical condition upon arrival, and her survival chances were minimal. They claimed the decision to proceed with surgery was taken with full consent from her husband.
An investigation is expected to follow to determine the exact cause of death.
