Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University Releases Five Superior Maize Hybrids

NEWS CHARIOT:-In a significant development for the agricultural sector, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University has released five high-performing hybrid maize varieties. This announcement was made by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aldas Janayya, on Sunday.
These new varieties were launched during the All India Coordinated Maize Research Project (AICRP) meeting held recently in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the supervision of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The five hybrid varieties released are Deccan Hybrid Maize 144, DHM 182, DHM 193, DHM 206, and DHM 218.
Highlighting the unique advantages of each variety, Professor Janayya stated that DHM 144, also known as Telangana Maize-6, contains a high level of starch content. This makes it particularly suitable for ethanol production, which has become a key focus in renewable energy initiatives.
Another variety, DHM 206 (Telangana Maize-3), is well-suited for cultivation in upland areas. It has shown excellent resistance to foliar diseases, particularly leaf blight, which often impacts crop yield and quality. These hybrids have demonstrated superior performance in research trials when compared to the existing maize varieties currently available to farmers.
Professor Janayya emphasized that these newly developed hybrids offer multiple benefits, including higher yield potential, better disease resistance, and adaptability to varying climatic conditions. He encouraged the farming community to adopt these new varieties to improve productivity and income.
He also highlighted the university’s continued contributions to agricultural innovation, stating that a total of 24 hybrid maize varieties have been developed and released by the institution to date. Out of these, 16 varieties have already been officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, adding credibility and assurance to their effectiveness.
This milestone is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the maize farming sector in Telangana and across the country, providing farmers with better tools to meet rising demand and changing environmental conditions.
