Race Against Time: Search Continues for Workers in Srisailam Tunnel

NEWS CHARIOT:-The situation in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel remains critical as the rescue operation continues for over 48 hours. Despite relentless efforts, the whereabouts of the eight trapped workers remain unknown. The rescue mission is becoming increasingly challenging due to seepage water accumulating at a rate of 5,000 liters per minute, coupled with heavy mud deposits inside the tunnel.
Rescue teams have reached the collapsed section of the tunnel, where huge boulders, mud, and water have made the process even more difficult. Teams are working tirelessly to excavate hundreds of meters of debris and are conducting search operations beneath the collapsed structures. Mud removal from the SLBC tunnel is in progress, with a dewatering system in place to pump out water while using locomotive trains to remove the accumulated mud.
Authorities are formulating a strategic plan to retrieve the trapped workers once the mud is cleared. To expedite the process, the South Central Railway (SCR) has deployed a specialized team to assist with the rescue efforts. Experts in metal cutting and excavation have been mobilized from Secunderabad, Lallaguda, and Rayanapadu workshops, including senior section engineers, welders, and technicians to aid in clearing the debris.
Rescue operations involve multiple agencies, including the Army, Navy, NDRF, SDRF, Singareni, BRO, NGRI, GSI, and L&T, all working round the clock. However, the high water inflow and massive debris accumulation inside the tunnel are causing severe delays in reaching the trapped workers.
As concerns for the workers’ safety intensify, the government remains committed to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring their rescue.
