Reintroduction of Sports Recognition in HSC Certificates-Minister Sridhar Babu
NEWS CHARIOT (HYDERABAD, JAN.4) : In a recent statement, Telangana’s Education Minister, Sri Devanand Sridhar Babu, suggested the reintroduction of a practice that existed during the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) system, where students’ achievements in physical education and sports were included alongside their academic marks. Minister Babu highlighted that this approach could help foster greater interest and participation in sports among students.
Drawing from a historical example, he mentioned that when badminton coach Pullela Gopichand’s father, Subhash Chandrabose, completed his HSC in 1964, his school-issued certificate not only listed his academic performance but also recognized his excellence in various sports such as running races, high jump, long jump, and ball throwing. Babu emphasized that incorporating such achievements would motivate students to engage in sports and extracurricular activities.
The minister reiterated that the Telangana government is committed to promoting sports and has already established a Sports University to nurture athletic talent. The state’s focus is on ensuring that young people in Telangana have the opportunity to excel in Olympic sports and bring home medals. Babu assured that discussions with the government would continue to formalize this initiative, which could soon see students being recognized for their sporting achievements on their official academic certificates.
This proposed change aims to encourage students to develop a balanced skill set, combining both academic excellence and athletic prowess, thus further enriching the educational experience in the state.
