NEWS CHARIOT (Warangal, Nov.12) : For the first time, the officials have taken up the restoration works of the ancient and historic Bhadrakali Lake which was constructed 900 years back during the reign of the Kakatiya Dynasty which is situated here in the heart of Hanamkonda city.
The lake which used to be present in around 621 acres of land in survey number 843 surrounded between hillocks with famous Sri Bhadrakali Lake to one side and Siddeshwara Swamy temple to the other side used to be one of the beautiful spots to visit for nature lovers and devotees.
But with encroachment of more than 200 acres of land, the lake has shrunk to around 386.37 acres of land at present with the establishment of several colonies surrounding the lake along with illegal constructions and encroachment of land in the FTL and Buffer zone.
The water in the lake was polluted with release of drainage water from surroundings areas which include zoo park, function halls, illegal constructed apartments, Shayampet circle and Bondi wagu along with accumulation of large quantities of silt with around 2 meters from the depth and with enormous growth of the Water Hyacinth (Gurrapu Dekka).
The lake once used to serve as a main drinking water source for the people of tri-cities of Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet has now just remained as a water body in the city and is used only by the people of fishermen community for growing of fishes.
The Assistant Executive Engineer of the Irrigation department Radhika said that if water was released at once there would be a problem of surrounding colonies being submerged in the water. So keeping in view of that, officials decided to release the water slowly on a daily basis which would take 15 to 20 days to empty the lake.
The water that is released is supplied to the Nagaram lake present in the Hasanparthy mandal. After emptying the lake, the silt and soil that was accumulated to the height of 2 meters from the depth will be removed to increase the water storage capacity along with diverting the drainage water from entering into the lake from surrounding colonies, she added.
