Son Halts Father’s Funeral Over Property Dispute in Jangaon District

NEWS CHARIOT : In a shocking incident, a son halted his father’s funeral proceedings over a property dispute, causing turmoil in the family and leaving the deceased’s body lying uncremated for three days. The incident occurred in Edunuthula village, Kodakandla mandal, Jangaon district, highlighting the growing impact of property conflicts on family relationships.

As per tradition, it is the son’s responsibility to perform the final rites of his father. However, Ramesh, the son of the deceased Velikatte Yadgiri, refused to proceed with the funeral unless his demand for land was met. Yadgiri (65), who had two wives, owned 15 acres of land that was equally divided among his children. Following the death of the second wife’s son, Upendar, his five-acre share was transferred to his sister Shobarani, who later sold three acres and kept the remaining two acres.

Ramesh, claiming that he was not informed about the transfer, demanded that the two acres of land be transferred to his name before he would allow his father’s last rites to take place. This demand led to a bitter rift between him and his sister, Shobarani, halting the funeral proceedings and causing a family dispute to escalate.

Despite attempts by village elders and family members to convince Ramesh to proceed with the funeral and settle the property issue later, he remained firm in his decision. The situation became more tense, with local police eventually intervening to mediate. After police involvement, Ramesh agreed to perform the final rites, which were carried out on Thursday.

This incident has drawn widespread attention to the destructive effects of property disputes, overshadowing personal grief and family responsibilities. It underscores the need for conflict resolution and the potential harm caused when financial interests interfere with familial duties and traditions.
