Southwest Monsoon Hits Andaman-Nicobar Islands Early; Kerala Likely by May 27

NEWS CHARIOT:-The much-awaited Southwest Monsoon, responsible for the majority of India’s annual rainfall, has made an early entry this year, touching parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, southern Bay of Bengal, and southern Andaman Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the monsoon reached these regions by Tuesday afternoon, ahead of its usual schedule.

The arrival of the monsoon has already triggered heavy rains across the Nicobar Islands over the past two days. IMD officials noted that favorable atmospheric conditions are helping the monsoon advance swiftly and actively.

In a significant development, the IMD has projected that the monsoon could reach the Kerala coast by May 27—several days earlier than the average onset date of June 1. If this happens, it would mark the earliest arrival since 2009, when the monsoon struck Kerala on May 23. That year, too, saw above-normal rainfall, and a similar trend is expected this season.

The IMD also mentioned that over the next three to four days, the monsoon is likely to expand further into the southern Arabian Sea, more areas of the Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman-Nicobar region.

In Telangana, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive by June 12. The state may receive above-average rainfall this season, according to the meteorological forecast. Additionally, the ongoing heatwave conditions are expected to ease within the next week, offering some relief to residents.

This early onset of the monsoon is likely to benefit agricultural activities in several regions, especially in southern and central India. However, the IMD continues to monitor the system closely and will issue timely updates as the monsoon progresses further across the subcontinent.

The early arrival has sparked hopes for a good monsoon season, which is crucial for India’s agriculture-driven economy, especially at a time when water reservoirs in several states are running low and farmers are preparing for sowing.
