Street Light Management in Greater Hyderabad Faces Challenges; New System to Ensure Efficiency

NEWS CHARIOT : Managing street lights in Greater Hyderabad has become a challenge, with mounting criticisms over the high costs involved. Officials have identified the lack of proper field-level management and monitoring systems as the primary cause. To address this, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to implement an Individual Light Monitoring (ILM) system, similar to that of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, to track every street light individually.
Currently, GHMC reports having 5.10 lakh street lights within 30 circles, all connected to a Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS). However, there is no clear count of the number of electricity poles, with field officers and contractors providing estimates that lack proper documentation. To fix this, a survey will be conducted through the newly developed Street Light Management System app, which will track details of electricity meters, panels, poles, and lights.
The new system aims to immediately detect non-functional street lights and resolve the issue swiftly. The app, developed under the TGS Online Agency, will allow authorities to keep track of all street light-related data, including maintenance and repairs.
Similar ILM systems have been successfully implemented in cities like Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and Surat. With sensors in each light, the system will only allow payment for lights that are operational, ensuring transparency and reducing unnecessary expenses. Additionally, the lights will be linked to TGS PDCL for direct billing, streamlining the payment process.
With a monthly cost of Rs.250-300 per light, this new system aims to eliminate the bulk billing issue, ensuring better management and reducing misuse of public funds.
