Telangana Government Plans to Distribute Free Sanna Rice to the Poor via Ration Shops
In a major initiative aimed at benefiting the poor, the Congress government in Telangana is preparing to distribute sanna rice (fine rice) through ration shops starting from the upcoming Ugadi festival. This move follows the government’s earlier decision to encourage farmers to cultivate sanna rice, offering them a bonus of ₹500. As a result, the state’s farmers have increased the cultivation of sanna rice, and the government is now set to purchase and distribute it for free to the underprivileged.
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao has confirmed that sanna rice will be available in ration shops from Ugadi. This comes after recognizing that many poor people were facing difficulties cooking with the coarse (dodda) rice currently distributed in ration shops. To address this issue, the Congress party had previously promised to supply sanna rice through ration shops, a commitment now being fulfilled.
The rising prices of rice in the market have raised concerns, particularly among the poor and middle-class families. The government’s decision to supply sanna rice through ration shops will help alleviate this burden. In the current Kharif season, the state’s Food Corporation has purchased 53.95 lakh tonnes of paddy from farmers, with a significant portion allocated for milling into sanna rice.
The Telangana government aims to distribute this sanna rice to ration cardholders, ensuring the poor have access to quality rice without spending extra money. By February 20, 22% of the total paddy procurement process had been completed, with 5.37 lakh tonnes of sanna rice identified for distribution. The Revanth Reddy-led government is also preparing new ration cards for distribution across districts once the election code concludes.
