Telangana Ranks Second in South for Food Adulteration : Tamil Nadu Tops the List

NEWS CHARIOT:-A recent report presented by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in Parliament has revealed concerning statistics on food adulteration across the country. Based on data collected over the past four years (2021–2024), Telangana ranks second among South Indian states, with a significant portion of food samples testing adulteration.
The nationwide average of adulterated food samples stands at 22%, highlighting the growing threat to food safety and public health. The data, compiled from regular inspections and laboratory tests, shows that despite food safety regulations, adulteration remains a persistent issue.
Among South Indian states, Tamil Nadu reported the highest rate of adulterated food samples, with 20 out of every 100 samples found to be unsafe or tampered with. Telangana followed closely, with 14% of samples failing quality checks.
Kerala came third with 13.11%, while Andhra Pradesh reported 9%, placing it fourth in the region. Karnataka showed relatively better results, with only 6.3% of its food samples testing adulterated.
Experts warn that the consumption of adulterated food can lead to serious health issues, including food poisoning, organ damage, and long-term illnesses. The Ministry emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of food safety laws and more frequent inspections.
Food safety activists and health professionals are calling for a multi-pronged approach to tackle this issue, including Enhanced public awareness campaigns,Better infrastructure for food testing,Harsher penalties for violators,Increased transparency in food supply chains.
With food being a daily essential, the high levels of adulteration have raised alarms about the quality and safety of what reaches the consumer’s plate. States with higher adulteration rates are now under pressure to improve monitoring mechanisms and ensure compliance with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations.
The report serves as a wake-up call for both authorities and the public to prioritize food safety and health over profit and negligence.
