Telangana RTC Buses to Halt from Midnight May 6: Unions Call for Statewide Strike

NEWS CHARIOT:-Public transportation across Telangana is set to come to a grinding halt from midnight on May 6, as all RTC buses will be confined to depots due to a massive strike announced by trade unions. The protest is led by the Telangana RTC Joint Action Committee (JAC), demanding the immediate preservation and merger of RTC with the government—a long-standing demand of workers.
The strike decision follows a lack of response from the RTC management, the Telangana government, and the Labor Commissioner, despite a formal strike notice being served on January 27, 2024. According to the unions, multiple requests and negotiations failed to yield any progress on resolving issues concerning RTC employees, including job security, salaries, and the long-pending merger process.
The final call for united action was made during a key meeting of all major RTC trade unions held recently at the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Hyderabad. During the session, a unanimous resolution was passed, declaring that from now on, all RTC unions in Telangana would move forward with “one word, one path”—signifying collective strength and a unified strike movement.
The JAC leaders appealed to all trade unions—regardless of their internal disagreements or past rivalries—to join forces under a common banner and fight to safeguard the interests of RTC workers. They alleged that the government has been deliberately delaying the merger and attempting to weaken the corporation, which has worsened the plight of employees.
With over 10,000 buses potentially off the roads, commuters across Telangana, especially daily wage workers, students, and office-goers, are likely to face serious inconvenience starting May 7. The unions have also warned that the strike may intensify if the government fails to initiate urgent talks or meet the demands. The government is yet to issue an official response to the strike announcement.
