Telangana’s Fine Rice Prices Drop by ₹500 per Quintal Due to Government Measures

NEWS CHARIOT:-In a significant development for rice consumers in Telangana, the prices of fine rice have witnessed a substantial decrease, with a drop of ₹500 per quintal in recent weeks. The reduction is being attributed to a combination of government initiatives and changes in market demand.

The Telangana government’s distribution of fine rice to ration beneficiaries has been a key factor behind this price drop. By providing ₹500 per quintal as a bonus for fine paddy, the government has encouraged farmers to increase the cultivation of fine paddy. This surge in production has led to a decrease in market demand, subsequently driving down prices.

Earlier, fine rice was selling for ₹5,500 to ₹6,500 per quintal, but the prices have now come down to ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 per quintal. Newly harvested rice is currently priced at ₹5,000 per quintal, while older varieties such as Sonamasuri, RNR, and HMT are priced between ₹5,400 and ₹5,600 per quintal.

The government’s procurement program, where fine paddy is purchased from farmers with the ₹500 bonus, has not only increased the availability of fine rice in the market but also ensured that the poor benefit from better quality rice through the public distribution system (PDS). Before the distribution initiative, coarse rice was being sold by beneficiaries due to its low quality, which led to inflated prices in the open market.

Since the introduction of the fine rice distribution plan in April (Ugadi), the government has distributed 1,41,792.95 tonnes of rice to over 2 crore beneficiaries, and more than 75% of the monthly rice quota has already been distributed. This initiative has helped stabilize prices and ensured that the poor have access to better-quality rice, while the demand for fine rice in the open market has decreased.

As a result, Telangana’s rice market is seeing a balanced price drop, benefiting both consumers and farmers, with the government’s intervention playing a pivotal role in this transformation.
