Let’s take a look at the top five states where Telugu is spoken the most.
Globally, English dominates as the most spoken language, while in India, Hindi takes the top spot. However, when it comes to South India, Telugu emerges as the most widely spoken language. Unlike North India, where Hindi is predominant across multiple states, South India has a diverse linguistic landscape, with each state having its own primary language.
Despite migration and settlement in different regions, Telugu-speaking people have retained their language and culture. Today, Telugu is spoken in many states beyond Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Following the bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh, the state was reorganized, but its Telugu-speaking population remains the highest. With a population exceeding 50 million, 89.2% of Andhra Pradesh’s residents speak Telugu, making it the top state for Telugu speakers.
Telangana, which was once part of Andhra Pradesh, has a significant Telugu-speaking population. With a total population of over 30 million, 75.8% of the people in Telangana speak Telugu as their mother tongue. Urdu is the second most spoken language in the state, with smaller communities speaking Lambadi and Gondi.
Karnataka has long been home to a large number of Telugu-speaking migrants. Over the years, many Telugu-speaking people from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have settled in Karnataka for business and employment opportunities. Currently, 5.9% of Karnataka’s population speaks Telugu.
Tamil Nadu, which shares a border with Andhra Pradesh, has a historical connection with Telugu-speaking people. Many Telugu families have been residing in the state since the time of the Madras Presidency. With a total population exceeding 70 million, 5.8% of Tamil Nadu’s population speaks Telugu.
Though geographically isolated, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a surprisingly large Telugu-speaking population. The region has a small total population, yet 13.2% of the people here speak Telugu, making it one of the highest concentrations of Telugu speakers in India.
Telugu is not just confined to South India. It has a strong presence in various states across India and is also widely spoken by Indian communities abroad. It is estimated that over 80 million people speak Telugu in India, and this number increases significantly when considering the global Telugu-speaking diaspora.
