Tragic Fire at Gulzar House Shakes Hyderabad

NEWS CHARIOT:-A tragic fire accident at Gulzar House near Charminar in Hyderabad claimed the lives of 17 people and left several others seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday. The blaze broke out at “Sri Krishna Pearls,” a popular jewelry store owned by Govind Modi, Sunil Modi, and Pankaj Modi.
The fire reportedly started around midnight due to the explosion of an air conditioner compressor in the ground-floor shop. The explosion led to a rapid spread of toxic gases, thick smoke, and flames, engulfing the building in minutes. Firefighters responded promptly and began rescue operations, but the intensity of the fire made their task difficult.
According to preliminary reports by fire department officials, the high casualty count was largely due to the absence of basic fire safety measures. The building lacked a proper fire exit, and the interiors were lined with wooden panels that accelerated the spread of the fire. Authorities also noted that the building had only one narrow internal exit, making escape difficult for residents trapped inside.
Most of the victims died due to suffocation. Three people were declared dead at the scene, while 14 others succumbed to injuries during treatment in the hospital. The deceased included four women, four children, and several men.
The fire occurred in the early morning hours, when most people were asleep, which contributed to the tragedy. Officials stated that residents were unable to react in time due to deep sleep and were quickly overwhelmed by the smoke and flames.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao, and K.T. Rama Rao expressed deep grief over the incident. They extended condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to ensure the best medical care for the injured. The central government has announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families.
The incident has left the local community in shock and raised serious concerns about fire safety enforcement in commercial and residential buildings across the city.
