Tragic Outcome: 8 Workers Dead After Being Trapped in SLBC Tunnel for a Week
NEWS CHARIOT:-Despite extensive rescue efforts, authorities have confirmed the deaths of eight workers trapped in the SLBC tunnel for the past week. The workers, including two engineers and six laborers, had been stuck since a tunnel collapse on February 21. Over the course of the week, the government launched a large-scale operation, deploying advanced machinery, radar systems, and railway experts. This mission included cutting through the tunnel with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) and plasma gas cutters to clear debris and reach the workers.
The bodies were found three meters below the surface, confirming the workers had perished under the rubble. Ground-penetrating radar helped locate the bodies after the tunnel’s roof collapsed, and it was confirmed they were buried under three feet of debris. Although initially hopeful, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed grief upon the confirmation of their deaths, and both ruling and opposition leaders criticized the handling of the rescue operation. Allegations of insufficient government response have sparked a broader political debate.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about safety protocols and rescue strategies, with many questioning whether more could have been done to prevent or mitigate the disaster. The families of the deceased workers are set to receive their loved ones’ remains, though the emotional toll of the loss will likely linger long after the recovery efforts conclude.
