UPI Payments to Stop for Inactive Mobile Numbers from April 1

NEWS CHARIOT:-Starting April 1, 2025, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions will no longer be possible from mobile numbers that have been inactive for 90 days. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced this rule as a security measure to prevent fraud and unauthorized transactions.
UPI has become an integral part of digital payments in India, enabling seamless transactions from small vendors to large businesses. However, inactive mobile numbers linked to UPI accounts pose a serious security risk. When telecom companies reassign deactivated numbers to new users, there is a possibility that UPI-linked bank accounts may remain associated with those numbers, leading to unauthorized transactions.
To counter this risk, NPCI has decided that any mobile number that remains unused or deactivated for 90 days will be delinked from the UPI system. This move will ensure that fraudulent transactions are minimized and that digital payments remain secure.
Users who have changed their mobile numbers or stopped using an old number must ensure that their bank and UPI service providers are updated with their active number. Failure to do so will result in the inability to make UPI payments via apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm.
Banks and UPI platforms have been instructed to regularly update the list of inactive numbers to prevent fraud. Going forward, users may also need to provide explicit approval to link their mobile number with UPI services.
This new regulation is expected to enhance the security of digital transactions and protect users from potential fraud.
