Vemugallu Nandeeshwaralayam: A Hidden Gem of Telangana’s Ancient Past

NEWS CHARIOT : The ancient Nandeeshwaralayam temple in Vemugallu, located in the Balkonda Assembly constituency, has caught the attention of historians for its exceptional heritage value. As part of a heritage field visit, Kankanala Rajeshwar, a historian and member of the New Telangana History Team, explored the temple on Friday. He was joined by the team’s State Convener, Sriramoju Haragopal.
The team documented several rare sculptures and inscriptions from the site. Among the notable discoveries are a Kakatiya-style Nandi idol seated on a pedestal, a post-Kakatiya Durga Devi, Chalukya-style Lakshmi, a 6-foot Shiva Lingam, and a massive Ganesha in Lalitasana, reflecting the Rajakuta style.
Also identified were Kakatiya-style fire pillars, Chalukyan Kala Bhairava, Nag idols near an ancient tree, Panchamukha Anjaneya, and two more Hanuman sculptures. A Veeragallu (hero stone) near the shrine of Sri Shankara Dasamayya was also recorded.
Rajeshwar noted that one inscription dates back to the 11th century. He added that two Bheemgal inscriptions were recently published in the Telangana Heritage Department’s Nizamabad Inscriptions Compilation.
“The architectural styles here span centuries and dynasties — Kakatiya, Chalukya, and post-Kakatiya. This is not just a religious site, but a repository of history,” Rajeshwar told the press. He stressed the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect such rare historical and cultural assets.
The visit highlights the significance of Vemugallu as a vital piece of Telangana’s ancient and diverse cultural landscape.
